Foiling | Flying On Water with Team USA Oracle | 72-foot Sailboat
If you are not an avid sailing enthusiast then you most likely have no idea what the term “foiling” is or has to do with sailing. Like most people we are sure you probably don’t follow sailing nor do you follow sailboat racing. Well we all here at the mansion are very interested in foiling and high speed sailboat racing across the open waters which can reach double the speeds of a traditional sailboat that partakes in numerous races around the world so we thought we would share some really cool sailing and foiling info, pictures and videos of the high speed thrilling action. So before we go any further let us just say that these aren’t your typical 20-30 foot sailboat or even a 40 foot sailboat these sailboats are catamarans and they are over 72-feet long and travel over 40 – 50 knots which is roughly 45-65 mph. Now that might not seem fast at first but we are talking a 72 foot long catamaran sailboat powered by the wind and ran by a team of typically 14 members to manage the sails and the direction of the boat. Now not only are these boats long but they are extremely expensive due to their materials and engineering designs. Have a look at this site, if you need 2 lb polyurethane foam urgently. Take for example the AC72 cataraman sailboat designed by Oracle Team USA which has a wing that towers of 20 meters above the deck which allows these boats to fly literally. With these wings the term foiling has been created where the entire boat lifts out of the water to provide a smoother sailing experience while double the speeds. This is a must see and if you have never watched or even heard of high speed sailing or foiling then you must see the videos below and keep an eye out for some of the televised events like the 2013 America’s Cup which is set to begin on July 4th 2013. As of now there is only 4 teams signed up and rumors are saying that Oracle Team USA owner Larry Ellison is the main cause since his team winning of the 2010 cup he has been granted to set the rules for the 2013 America’s Cup San Franscisco boats which he has chosen the 72 foot catamaran sailboats in order to increase the speeds and action with the new age boats engineering allowing for the foiling effect which is more of a spectator add on. Take a look for yourself and tell us what you think in the comments below. Would you like to be on one of these sailboats? What about foiling, do you thinks its way cool to see a 72 foot sailboat elevate out of the water and basically fly? Be sure to let us all know here at the mansion.
